DJ TECHNIC & RUINZ ASON ‘Hoodstarz & Villains’ (Produced by J-Flames) This is a big mixtape that I’ve been jamming hard since I had it earlier in the week. I must admit that lately I have been getting bored of UK acts as they seem to be all losing their essence of Hip-Hop, but with Ruinz Ason’s new street album ticks all the boxes for me! The production from J-Flames is outstanding and will appeal to anyone who likes that Swiss Beats or old school Kayne West sound. The word that came into my mind when I jammed it was ‘Fruity’ (lol)! Its got energy and a vibe that I really like. Standout tracks include the massive opening track ‘Call Me Ruinz Ason’ which injects some great brass and orchestral vibes over an up-tempo beat. Lyrically Ruinz Ason shows that he has his wordplay on lock as well as having some sick metaphors. Stateside ‘DJ Technic’ must have been buzzing when he heard his name drop in the hook! Other killer tracks for me included the deeper ‘Hello London’ which has a massive club feel with its guest verse from US rapper Chief Waki and something I feel could be a big single. I also love the huge collaboration with one of other favourite new talents Phoenix Da Icefire entitled ‘Illuminati’. This is a deep track and shows a different side to Ruinz. What I liked about this mixtape was that it didn’t just use J. Armz instrumentals; it came with original production and came with some effort. In fact this is a street album not even a mixtape and this is without a doubt one of my favourite releases from a UK act in 2010 so far. More please…
